The chief concern of my research project is to explore the possibilities of photography as a material practice within the context of contemporary visual art/photographic practice. My intention is to develop modes of photography that critique its own history, materiality, processes and contemporary condition. It is anticipated that this engagement will continually question and renegotiate photography's relationship to other media within the visual arts, as well as technologies and issues relating to broader contemporary culture. Of particular interest is the relationship between the various processes associated with photography and its products/photographs.
I will explore ways of making, presenting and representing photography through a material based practice, using contemporary abstract painting, digital media, installation art, and process-based photography as my frames of reference. I will reference installation art and sculptural practices to explore the three-dimensional nature of the photograph (objectness) and make works about photography that are not necessarily photographic in form.
Contemporary abstract painting will be referenced to critique and explore the relationship between photography and painting beyond the indexical. Of particular interest is the relationship between process painting and process photography as practices that are driven by materiality. Process photography will also allow an exploration and critique of photography and digital technologies through various processes of production.
The outcome of this research report will comprise of artifacts and a supporting document of approximately 10,000 words.
